Album review for “Tonight” by tobyMac

Toby “tobyMac” McKeehan is a musical veteran. He co-fronted one of the earliest Christian rock bands, dcTalk, in the late 1980s and launched a successful solo career in the 2000s. His music has been featured in movies, commercials, and sports highlight reels. He’s won numerous Dove awards and is Grammy nominated. At 45 years old, he doesn’t necessarily have anything left to prove, but that doesn’t stifle his musicianship in anyway. A renowned performer of the live stage, tobyMac pours every ounce of energy into his projects, and his latest album “Tonight” is no exception. The record bursts with some of Toby’s best material to date and is full of catchy hip-hop flavored rock. The album opener and title track features layers of stylistic creativity and just screams “radio worthy.” The feel-good “Get Back Up” encourages us to get back up on our feet when we’ve fallen (earlier this month, proceeds from this download went to a Haitian relief fund). We get a taste of classic tobyMac with “Funky Jesus Music” and a heart-felt praise song in “City on Our Knees.” More fun comes our way in “Showstopper” and we get heavy with “Changed Forever.” The beautiful “Hold On” follows and tobyMac’s son, Truett, makes his trademark appearance on “Loud’N’Clear.” The trippy and edgy “Hey Devil” comes next, a personal favorite of mine on the record. Several noteworthy artists lend their vocals to this album, including Matt Thiessen of Relient K on “Wonderin’.” Toby goes Rob Thomas on “Start Somewhere” and he and Israel Houghton bring it back to church on “Break Open the Sky,” the perfect album closer to a brilliant artist showcase.
