Summer Vacation with The Waking – “Beach Reads and Summer Playlists”

Ah summer vacation! A chance to take that trip to the beach we’ve been dreaming about all year, lay out on the sand with some strawberry lemonade (see Summer Recipes ;), and relax with a good book. So us girls here at The Waking thought we’d share some of our favorite beach reads with you guys! Also, what would a great summer be without great summer soundtracks? Below are a couple playlists of songs we’ve been jammin’ to these long summer days. Hope you guys enjoy! 🙂

“What a Girl Wants” (the Ashley Stockingdale series) by Kristin

All I want is a cute Christian guy who doesn’t live with his mother – and maybe a Prada bag.”

“What a Girl Wants” is about the complicated and often hilarious love life of Ashley Stockingdale. Ashley is a successful patent attorney living in Silicon Valley, but at 31 is still stuck in her churches singles group, which she jokingly calls “The Reasons”. Wanting to break out of this rut, she decides to get a new attitude. But when Ashley soon garners the attention of three guys – a fellow “Reason” who is obsessed with The Matrix and clueless about relationships, a possible Christian Dr. who has an odd fascination with her IQ, and a weird obligation date with the brother of a high school friend … things really get complicated. Author Kristin Billerbeck truly does chick-lit at its very best. The character she created with Ashley feels like your quirky best friend. These books are full of witty, funny banter, but also touches of wisdom sprinkled through out. One of my favorite lines in this book is when Ashley says “What a girl wants is God’s will for her life. Nothing else even compares.” This is the first book in the series; don’t forget to also pick up “She’s Out Of Control”, and “With This Ring I’m Confused”. I’ve read this series countless times but every time I read it I find myself loving it even more. Maybe the best way to describe it is as the perfect summer treat, something akin to a frappuccino with a huge dollop of whipped cream – Mmmm. With its quirky, laugh-out loud humor, it is the perfect read for a day of laying out on the beach.

“Gift from the Sea” by Anne Morrow Lindbergh

I bought “Gift from the Sea” back in December at my local bookstore/coffee shop. I hate the bitter cold and over cast skies of the winter season, so when i saw the pretty sea shell art on “Gift from the Sea,” i knew it was just the thing to bring memories of glorious sunshine and warm temperatures back to my mind. Now being summertime, i find myself going back to the book and enjoying it in the beautiful lazy days of summer. “Gift from the Sea” was written by Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of aviator Charles Lindbergh. Anne wrote the book back in the 1950’s while vacationing in a cottage on the Florida Gulf, and it has been reprinted with a very special forward written by her daughter Reeve Lindbergh. From the first chapter, “Gift from the Sea” is a delightful read, filled with insightful and beautiful thoughts that will warm your soul and fill you with a new sense of wonder and curiosity for the sea and all that’s within it. It’s the perfect summer read that will make you just want to run to your nearest beach and dive right in the water. In the book, in which each chapter is titled after a sea shell, Anne relates her thoughts to sea life, making you see what the beach and all it’s wonder can teach the human spirit. Anne shows you that the beach forces you to slow down and enjoy your life, while examining and the way you live your life day to day. This book is a very easy read, and has a flowy laid back relaxed feel…it just begs for you to sip a glass of cold lemonade and sit on your front porch in the summer evenings, while reading through the lovely chapters and discovering what the sea has to offer you.

Patience, patience, patience, is what the sea teaches. Patience and
faith. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach – waiting for a
gift from the sea
